About Sew Certain
Why we made it
We’re a bunch of sewists who can happily spend far too long talking about fabric and sewing. Sew Certain grew out of that obsession, and out of the frustration of getting stuck on a question when you just want to get on with making something. We wanted one place that answers it quickly, in plain words, and then gets out of your way.
A question in front of you
Whether you’re choosing a needle, comparing fabrics, matching thread or working out why a seam is puckering, that’s the question we’re trying to answer.
Research and experience
Everything here starts with a real question about the fabric in front of you. We draw on technical references, trusted sewing books, conversations with experienced sewists and what we learn from working with fabric ourselves. Not every guide has been tested in every situation, and we won’t always get it right. When we’re wrong, we fix it, and the page says so.
The work behind the pictures
We photographed 588 spools of thread and every one of the 125 fabrics in our library. We also designed and authored the sewing infographics, starting with our own hand-drawn ideas. That hands-on work is part of what makes Sew Certain ours.
About the illustrations
Some things are easier to show than to explain. Some of the graphics and illustrations are AI-drawn or enhanced to make a sewing idea easier to see, with sewists reviewing and revising the illustrations as we go.
How we use the tools
We use AI for more than the drawings. It helps us sort research notes and it writes first drafts, the way a rotary cutter is quicker than shears. Sewists review and revise the guides as we go. They’re a published library we edit and update. Nothing on this site is generated on the fly in answer to your question.
Keep learning with us
This is a passion, not a product line. We’re still learning, and the knowledge base will keep growing. If something here helped, or something here is wrong, tell us.
